Perhaps one of the most frightening critters that are oh so common to find crawling around the home or nearby outside are spiders. There’s something about their long legs, webs full of insects, and the threat of them getting too close for comfort that cause many homeowners to wonder how to control spiders, and more importantly how to prevent them from getting inside in the first place! Spiders are a common pest and for them to find their way into your home, well, it’s a lot easier than you may think. But here’s the good news, most house spiders are not a threat, but more of a nuisance pest. And, there are several ways to help prevent spiders from crawling inside and being their creepy selves.
4 Spider Prevention Tips
Do a thorough inspection of the outside of your home. You want to look for any little cracks or crevices along the foundation, around the windows, and around the doors. Any small openings are a wide open door to spiders. So, here’s what to do: seal off all of these openings right away and close that door to spiders!
Trim back any bushes, shrubs, or tree branches that are touching the side of the home. Often times, spiders will hide out in overgrown landscaping and when there happens to be a bridge, say a tree branch that connects them to your home, it is going to be a lot easier for spiders to get inside or just spin unsightly webs on the outside of your home.
If there are any screens in your home that are torn or do not properly fit into the window frame, replace them right away or keep the window closed. As mentioned before, any small openings are a wide open door to a small spider.
Spend time going through those less frequently visited rooms to eliminate the clutter. Spiders, and many other pests for that matter, use clutter as a place to hide out. Spiders can safely spin their webs and go hunting for insects right in the comfort of your home if they are given the space to do so. Instead, try to make sure that items are stored in plastic totes with lids, vacuum and dust storage rooms, and always remove spider webs when you see them.
Now, here’s the important thing to remember. Even after you have fully implemented these spider prevention tips, sometimes these critters are just plain sneaky and you may find that there are still a few eight legged pests crawling around your home or hanging out in their webs. If this is the case, you will want to get a hold of your local pest control professional in order to assist in the spider control process. In many cases, preventative treatments of carefully applied pesticides will be just the trick to making sure that spiders stick to their outside habitats.
