3 Reasons Why You Still Need Pest Control In The Winter

Previous Post | Next Post

Pest problems don't go away with the warm weather. Make sure your home is protected from insects and rodents this winter.

When the temperature drops we like to snuggle up next to our fireplaces with our hot chocolate and dream about those warm summer days ahead.  Unfortunately we are not always alone.  There are critters lurking in our attics and crawl spaces; they are dining on our crumbs and trash and just like us, they are trying to stay warm.

Mice, squirrels, spiders and cockroaches, to name a few, all start to seek out shelter in the late fall months as the weather starts to get colder.  Along with trying to find a warm place to stay, their food supply is also compromised in the winter months, what better place for a delicious, free meal than in your kitchen cupboards?

As winter approaches your first thought may be, “how can I save money over the long winter months?”   Temporarily suspending your pest control service is one way to save money in the short term, but in the long term could potentially cost you thousands more.  Here’s three good reasons why canceling your pest control in winter is a bad idea:

  1. Unlike many insects, mice and other rodents are not able to go dormant in the winter.  Squirrels, rats and mice continually work year round to build warm nests often times in your home.  The potential damage an infestation of mice can cause you could reach into the thousands to repair.  These damages include torn insulation, damaged electrical wiring, chewed drywall and ruined appliances.

  2. Spiders also start to look for a warmer place to stay in the cooler winter months.  They enter through windows and chimneys and love to take up residence in quiet areas of your home like your attic.  Although they cause no structural damage to your home, a spider infestation often times leads to anxiety with many harboring a strong fear of these eight-legged creatures.  Also the incidence of spider bites increases dramatically in the winter.

  3. When most people think of the causes for allergies and asthma they think dust, pollen and pet dander, but cockroaches can be linked to these health problems.  In the winter months this risk increases as families and cockroaches spend more time indoors.  Droppings from roaches as well as their saliva and decomposing bodies all produce allergen proteins that can increase allergies and trigger the symptoms of asthma, this is especially true for children.  With increased trips to the doctors, your savings have gone out the window.

By keeping your pest control services active all year, you will not only protect your budget from unexpected expenses, but you will get a jump start on the spring infestations.  Contact your local professional pest control specialist for more tips on how to keep your home pest free in the winter and all throughout the year.
