4 Tips For A Bed Bug Free Year

It is the start of a new year and many people have made resolutions and goals to make this year their best year yet. One goal that may not be at the top of your list (but probably should be) is to make sure your home remains bed bug free in 2014. With bed bugs still a major problem all across the country, this goal may seem easier said than done. But rest assured, with some quality professional help and vigilance on your end, you can help to make sure that your home is and stays bed bug free.

To help with your quest, below are 4 tips to help make sure that this year will be bed bug free for you, your home and family. Bed bug prevention tips include:

1. Knowing how bed bugs make their way into your home and how to identify them. Adult bed bugs can be seen with the naked eye, they are a reddish brown color, flat and oval in shape; resembling an apple seed with legs. They are often found in the cracks of wooden furniture, walls, baseboards and underneath of mattresses and bed springs. Bed bugs hitchhike their way into home in your luggage, shopping bags, and clothing.

2. Be vigilant while traveling. Bed bugs are commonly brought home after traveling and they can be found in hotels, motels, airplanes, buses and everywhere in between. Make sure to inspect your hotel room before bringing in your luggage and keep luggage up off the floor when staying in the hotel. Upon returning home, make sure to immediately wash clothing in hot water and inspect and clean out your suitcase before storing it.

3. Be cautious when purchasing or using used items. Used items, especially clothing and furniture, should be carefully inspected and cleaned before bringing it into your home. And if possible, try to avoid bringing used items into your home.

4. Have a local pest control company on your side. If you don’t already have a year round pest control service in place, now is a great time to sign up! Most local pest control companies offer additional services for bed bugs like bed bug inspections and if necessary bed bug heat treatments in order to completely eradicate them from your home. This will help to ensure that a bed bug infestation does not overtake your home and that it and your family are protected against bed bugs and other pests throughout the entire year.
