Ant Control Tips For Your Denver Home

Previous Post | Next Post

As the kids start heading back to school, it is obvious that autumn is just around the corner. And even when the cooler evenings arrive and signs of fall become more apparent, don’t expect ants to simply disappear.  While it is often thought that they’ll go away in the fall, actually that’s not always the case, especially if ants have found your home to be a great new place to live. So if you’ve got ants invading your home this summer, you could have them into the fall too. What can you do about this? Well, there are a few ant prevention techniques available to you without the assistance of a pest control professional. Environment modification, or exclusion techniques as they are sometimes called can be implemented to help you make your home less attractive to ants so that once summer is over, your ant problem will be too.

These exclusion techniques can help make your home a little less ant-friendly and a little more pest-free:

  1. Ants in Colorado are looking for sources of food inside your home, especially sugar ants and odorous house ants. Typically ants don’t nest inside your home, but they forage for food in your kitchen to take back to their colony, which is normally outside. If you keep your food unavailable to ants, they won’t find your home very inviting. You can do this by keeping your kitchen free from grease splatters, food spills and crumbs and making sure to clean under and behind your kitchen appliances regularly. Take trash out regularly too and make sure you never leave pet food out for an extended period of time.

  2. Make sure that any holes in the exterior of your home are closed up; ants will be getting in through cracks in the foundation, gaps around areas where utility pipes come into your home and even torn window or door screens. When you eliminate the place for them to enter, you won’t see ants inside your home.

  3. Keep your woodpile stored a distance from your home. Ants can be brought in on the wood, so it’s important to check over wood from your woodpile before bringing it indoors.

  4. Don’t let plants like bushes, shrubs or tree branches touch the side of your home. These things can act like a bridge for ants and other insects (and rodents too!), allowing them to easily climb onto your home. When you trim these plants away from your home, you eliminate one more area where ants can gain access to your home.

  5. Don’t use DIY ant control sprays! They are only targeting the ants that forage inside your home and do nothing to get rid of the entire colony. These sprays are also known for causing colonies to break apart and establish new nests over your property, making your problem exponentially worse!

If you have been looking for an ant control in Denver or Boulder, you should only rely on the control provided by a professional. Pest management professionals know what kinds of ant control treatments should be used and have plenty of experience taking care of ant problems for homes just like yours. They know what kinds of baits work best for different types of ants in different seasons and can help eliminate the entire colony of ants, not just the foragers. If your summer ant problem has grown out of control and you just don’t want to deal with these pests all fall too, contact a local Denver pest control company today to discuss your ant treatment options to get rid of these pests from inside your home.
