Are Ants Stealing Crumbs In Your Kitchen?

Previous Post | Next Post

Every summer when ant colonies become most active, homeowners begin to see them foraging through the home. While finding ants in the kitchen may be a common thing, it does mean that there is an ant colony nearby on your property. Until the colony has been taken care of (aka eliminated), you will continue to find these tiny insects crawling through your home. Most ants are simply a nuisance pest, but they are also very hard to control due to colonies containing thousands of ants. The good news is that there are a few tips that can help you get rid of ants in your home this summer when they are out foraging for food.

Ant Prevention Tips

  1. Inspect the exterior of your home including the foundation, windows and doors for any cracks or holes. These are perfect doors for ants to crawl inside so it is best to fill in the cracks and holes with caulking.

  2. If there are any window screens containing tears, they should be replaced as to keep the insects outside. Also, keep the doors closed unless they have a screen.

  3. Trim back bushes and shrubs that are touching the side of the home. These landscaping features can provide a perfect bridge that ants will use to crawl inside the home.

  4. When preparing food in the kitchen, make sure to clean up all food debris including crumbs and spills. They may not seem like a big deal but even the smallest particles of food will attract ants into the kitchen. And once inside, they will continue to return.

  5. Eliminate sources of excess moisture as it may attract more insects to your property and even inside the home.

If you have not already signed up for a year round pest control program, now is the time to do so. While you can try to prevent pests from getting inside your home, it often requires help from the pest control professionals to really make sure that your home remains ant free through the summer as well as throughout the entire year.

For those who are experiencing ants in the kitchen or even an abundance of ants outside on your property, it is best to call your local pest control professionals to have them help you eliminate the ant colony. As mentioned before, once ants find their way into your home, they are going to continue to return which is why professional ant control is necessary to really get rid of the pest problem.
