Cockroaches In Pennsylvania Homes

Previous Post | Next Post

Cockroaches are a pest that Pennsylvania homeowners definitely do not want in their homes. Besides being very prolific breeders and being able to take over a home in a very short period of time, cockroaches carry lots of dangerous bacteria on their legs that they will spread all over kitchens, bathrooms and other parts of the home. Roaches in Pennsylvania homes require professional pest control in order to completely get rid of them and help prevent a re-infestation. There are thousands of species of cockroaches that live all over the world and 3 species that can be commonly found in homes throughout Pennsylvania. Cockroaches found in Pennsylvania homes include:

  • The American cockroach- They are a large cockroach and can be 1-1/2 inches in length and are reddish brown in color. They prefer warm moist areas so inside homes they can be found in basements and bathrooms.

  • The Oriental cockroach- Another large cockroach that can grow in length up to 1 inch long, these cockroaches are a dark, oily black in color. They like dark moist areas and in homes can be found in bathrooms, wet basements, in crawl spaces and underneath porches.

  • The German cockroach- These are a smaller cockroach and grow in length between ¼-5/8 of an inch in length; they are light brown or tan in color with dark stripes down their head. They like to live in small, tight areas where moisture is present. In homes they can be found in kitchens, bathrooms and if there is a large infestation they will be found throughout the house.

Unfortunately roaches in Pennsylvania are not an uncommon occurrence and they are a very dangerous species of pest to invade your home because of the many pathogens that they bring with them. Before arriving in your home, the cockroaches were most likely crawling around in garbage, sewers, drains and bathroom areas. Once they make their way inside your home through cracks in foundations and gaps around windows and doors, they will crawl all over your food, food prep areas, dishes, cabinets and other parts of your home, spreading bacteria that can make you very ill. Also, the excrement and shed skin that they leave behind has the potential to trigger severe asthma attacks in people, especially in children.

At the first sign of cockroaches in your home you should immediately contact a Pennsylvania pest control company. Cockroaches are a species that you should not try to eliminate yourself; they have been around since the dinosaurs and it takes a specially trained person to be able to effectively and safely eliminate cockroaches from your home. Along with eliminating your current problem, a professional pest control service will be able to provide year round pest control to help prevent a future problem. Things that you can do around your home to deter cockroaches from wanting to choose your home and to help prevent cockroaches from entering include:
