Protect Your Home From Spiders In NJ

Previous Post | Next Post

Spiders are among some of the most common fall bugs to see in New Jersey homes this time of year. Spiders are presently scurrying around in search of food, shelter and a warm place to lay their eggs in for the winter. These eight legged creatures will enter into homes in large numbers leaving their webs in nearly every crook and cranny throughout your home. Spiders are experts at the game “hide and seek” and can be difficult to detect and eliminate without the help of a trained New Jersey pest control expert.

Having spiders in your home can present a few problems. First, they will create and abandon webs throughout your home adding to your cleaning. Second, they may cause you to become startled; let’s face it no one likes to open their eyes in the shower and see a spider staring back at them no matter how harmless the spider may be. Finally, spiders can bite! Most spiders will only bite if they are startled or feel threatened but they still have this ability. Generally, spiders in New Jersey may not cause much, if any reaction, but there are poisonous spiders like the black widow spider that can cause a severe allergic reaction that would require immediate medical attention.

The three most common species of spiders in New Jersey are:

  1. House spiders - a nuisance spider that is brownish yellow in color with long slender legs.

  2. Black widow spiders - a poisonous species that has a distinct red hourglass on the underside of their abdomen.

  3. Wolf spiders - a larger species that is brown to dark brown in color with bristles on their legs; their appearance is similar to that of a tarantula. They may appear intimidating but they are non-poisonous.

In order to help prevent your New Jersey home from being invaded by spiders this fall there are fixes that you can do around your home to help stop them from being able to enter into your house. Spider prevention tips include:

  • Caulk gaps found around windows and doors, and make sure that screens are intact without any rips or tears.

  • Seal cracks found in your homes’ foundation.

  • Make sure that any landscaping around your home is properly maintained and trimmed back away from your homes’ exterior; spiders will use branches of trees and plants to gain easy access to your home.

  • Keep woodpiles and other organic piles of debris away from your home since spiders like to hide in those types of areas.

  • Do not leave doors or windows open for long periods of time.
