Put Away Holiday Decorations Without The Pests

Previous Post | Next Post

This time of year many people’s homes are decorated top to bottom with festive holiday decorations. And once the holidays are over many will just throw their decorations in a box and the tree in the corner of the basement until next year. However, taking the time and effort to properly pack away and store your holiday decorations will ensure that they and your memories will be intact next year when it is time to decorate again. Pests like rodents, spiders, and others can easily get into basement and attic areas and damage your holiday decorations and other items that you have stored, if not put away properly.

Luckily there are some easy and simple ways to protect your holiday decorations and make sure that a cockroach infestation or any other pest problem doesn’t ruin your holidays. Some packing tips for storing away holiday decorations to prevent pest damages and an infestation include:

  • Inspecting the area that you will be storing your holiday decorations in to make sure there are no signs of pest activity. Keep the area as clutter free as possible, this way if a problem with a pest does occur you will be able to spot it easily.

  • When packing away your decorations and ornaments, make sure to put them into a plastic container with a locking lid. Remember pests like undisturbed areas and these boxes will not be touched again for another 10-11 months; a cardboard box will not stop a pest invasion.

  • Any edible ornaments that were handmade this holiday season should be discarded and re-made next year. This type of ornament will attract pests. A way to remember what you have created each year is to take a photograph; it’s easy to store and keep pest free.

  • Items made out of fabric such as stockings and tree skirts should be stored in sealed plastic bags. This will keep moisture out and prevent pests from getting in.

  • Artificial trees and wreaths should be stored in tree and wreath bags instead of the boxes they were purchased in. The bags are made out of heavy duty, moisture resistant material that will also be able to withstand pest invasions.

Along with storing your holiday decorations properly, having a year-round Kansas City pest control plan in place is one of the best ways to prevent pest infestations any time of the year. A year-round residential pest control plan will eliminate any current problems with pests that you may have and with regular treatments and inspections completed throughout the year to prevent future problems from happening.
