Rodent Exclusion

Previous Post | Next Post

Don't let mice and other rodents make their way into your home

Rodents prefer to live outdoors, but as the weather cools and food gets scarce they will move indoors.  Many people don't realize the many reasons why mice, rats and other rodents should be quickly removed from the home; they pose a threat to the inhabitant's health as well as the home itself.

Mice and rats are known carriers of Salmonella and Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome which can be deadly, and their urine can lead to allergies in children.  Rodents also pose a threat to the home itself as they build their nests, shredding the insulation, leaving urine stains and droppings behind, chewing on the structure weakening beams and creating holes in the drywall.  They are even capable of creating a fire hazard as they chew on electrical wires.

Mice and rats are hard to keep out of the home as they can fit through a space as small as ¼ inch, so it's important to make rodent exclusion a priority.  By correcting conditions around your home that would normally allow rodents to enter AND eliminating any potential food and water sources you may be able to prevent a rodent problem in your home.  Here’s a couple of ways you can discourage rodent activity.

  • Eliminate access to all food by storing items in glass containers with airtight lids

  • Use trash cans that have tight fitting lids and that can withstand chewing

  • Seal all cracks and holes that are larger than ¼ inch and take special care sealing up space around where utilities enter the home.

  • Inspect all pipes and drains to insure that there are no leaks or drips.

  • Install gutters to divert water away from the structure

  • Replace or repair all damaged screens in windows and doors as well as and chimney screen vents.

  • Remove pet food served outdoors after one hour.

  • Do not use outdoor feeders for birds or any kind of wildlife.

  • Regularly pick up nuts or fruit that have fallen from trees

  • Trim trees, shrubs and plants away from the home

  • Clear all debris from the yard to avoid nesting

  • Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the home and off the ground

These preventative steps will help to keep your home free from rodents, but no exclusion method can guarantee that you will keep all rodents out.  If you ever suspect that rodents have invaded your home, contact a pest control company in your area immediately to eliminate this threat.
