Types Of Spiders In Arkanas

Previous Post | Next Post

Did you know that there are many types of spiders in Arkansas and while some like the house spider is harmless if you don’t count the unsightly webs they craft in the corners, others are dangerous spiders (i.e. brown recluse spiders and black widows) that should be avoided. Lets take a closer look at a few of the arachnids that call Arkansas home.

American House Spider

As their name suggests these spiders are frequently found in homes. Typically brown or gray in color, the American house spider constructs webs in an effort to catch lunch (read other insects). Often times you can tell you are dealing with a spider infestation because of the presence of webs throughout the house, in garages and other outbuildings. Though they do not pose a health or property risk, house spiders are definitely considered a nuisance pest because of their propensity to leave behind webs (sometimes a lot of webs).

Brown Recluse Spider

A dangerous spider of Arkansas, the brown recluse (about the size of a quarter when its legs are spread out) is actually not aggressive and altercations between them and humans often happen by chance. Easily identified by the fiddle shaped pattern near their eyes (which incidentally is why some call them fiddleback spiders, brown fiddles or violin spiders), their coloring is typically tan or yellow. Brown recluse spiders could bite if threatened or handled and a bite from this venomous spider can be quite troublesome. In fact a brown recluse spider bite could result in open sores and may even cause skin and flesh to die or worse, death. If a brown recluse spider bite occurs, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Black Widow Spiders

Another type of spider in Arkansas that is considered dangerous is the black widow. Shiny black with the well-known red hourglass marking on the belly, this venomous spider prefers to create webs outside but may venture into garages, sheds and basements to catch insects. Though they aren’t aggressive they may bite if they perceive a threat but it may go unnoticed with the victim not noticing any symptoms. Unfortunately black widow spider bites can also cause anxiety, muscle cramping, headaches, nausea and vomiting, and seizure among other symptoms and should be treated by a medical professional.

If you are noticing a lot of spider activity in or around your home and property, consider contacting a pest control company to be on the safe side and to get rid of spiders that are annoying at best and potentially dangerous. You should also check your bed before sleeping, shake out your clothes and shoes as well as make sure your home is well sealed. Any cracks, gaps or openings could welcome spiders and insects.
