What Is Green Pest Control?

Previous Post | Next Post

In the pest control industry, many pest management firms are focusing on ‘going green’. But how can pest control possibly be green, when so many exterminators boast about the effectiveness of the chemicals and pesticides that they use?  We know that using pesticides and chemicals is not ‘green’ at all, so are all these pest control companies that are ‘going green’ actually giving up the chemicals? The answer to this question is both yes and no; pest control companies that are going green are finding better ways to get rid of pests in more environmentally responsible ways.

Green pest control does exist and can be extremely effective when done correctly. These factors can help a green pest control program work effectively in both residential and commercial environments.

  1. A green pest control program should address a pest problem from a holistic standpoint.  Pest control pros that are using a green approach to pest control should look at every possible facet of the problem, eliminating environmental factors that allow the problem to thrive before simply attacking the pests with chemicals.

  2. Proactive pest prevention tools should be used to modify the environment to make it less attractive to invading pests.

  3. Smaller amounts of pesticides or chemicals may be used in a smarter way. Materials that are chosen will be selected according to the greatest efficacy with the least environmental impact.

  4. Pest control professionals will choose products and applications that are effective but low risk and are naturally ecological.

  5. Control solutions that are non-threatening (such as insect light traps or humane traps) to control pests with the least environmental impact.

All of these pest control techniques allow for a pest control company to call themselves ‘green’. By choosing control options that don’t simply rely on the usage of chemicals but look to addressing the cause of the pest problem, pest control professionals have been able to legitimately claim that their services are safe and effective.  Finding new and less impactful methods of pest control can mean a healthier environment for you and a greener world for us all.
