6 Tips To Avoid Spider Bites

Previous Post | Next Post

We know they are around but just because spiders in Arkansas are a common household pest does not mean we should be subjected to their possible bites. While most spiders in the area are harmless, like many house spiders, some species including the brown recluse and black widow are a more dangerous species due to their venomous bites. The good news is that spiders are not an aggressive species so with a few changes in your everyday routine, you can easily help to reduce the risk of getting a spider bite in your home and getting a better night sleep, too.

  1. Check clothing and shoes - If you are digging through your closet for an old pair of shoes or an outfit that you have not worn in a while, make sure to shake out these items first. Spiders tend to live in areas that are well hidden from human activity which makes items in storage or the back of a closet an ideal place to spin a web and hunt for insects.

  2. Inspect bedding - Spider check! Before going to bed, make sure to check your sheets and bed skirt for any spiders that may have gotten mixed in. Although spiders will not seek to bite us, if they get kicked or nudged, they may bite out of fear.

  3. Keep a tidy room - Reducing clutter is always a great way to avoid pests including spider bites. How? By reducing the amount of boxes, clothing, and belongings scattered around the rooms in your home, you will greatly reduce the places that spiders can hide. Without shelter and a food supply (insects) they will not stay in your home.

  4. Watch out for used items - It you are heading to a yard sale or a consignment store for any used items including furniture and clothing, make sure to inspect the items before bringing them into your home. As mentioned before, spiders tend to hide out in items that have been unused for a while, which leaves yard sales and second hand stores a potential spider hub. It’s hard enough to keep the spiders right on your property from getting inside; don’t carry them right in from a yard sale down the road!

  5. Do not handle live spiders - It may seem obvious, but handling live spiders is a pretty easy way to get bit. Sometimes homeowners attempt to handle spiders in order to get rid of them, but this is not a good idea if you are trying to avoid getting any spider bites. Your best bet, especially if you are seeing dangerous spiders, is to call your local pest control professionals.

  6. Continue your year round pest control services - An easy way to avoid seeing spiders in your home is to continue your regularly scheduled pest control services. Preventing other insects, otherwise known as spider food, will help prevent spiders from seeking out the inside of your home in the first place and is a great way to reduce the risk of any spider bites. All you have to do is sit back and let your pest control technician handle the eight legged critters.
