Pest Free Holiday Decorating Tips

The holiday season is time for family, cheer, happiness, and being surrounded by lovely holiday décor and delicious foods. Each year we pull our decorations out from storage and start creating delectable goodies and treats. Unfortunately, many times pests find their way into your holiday cheer, making unnecessary problems during the most wonderful time of the year. If you want to avoid dealing with unwanted insects and rodents this holiday season, try following some simple tips to keep them out of your home.

Inspect holiday decorations for mice, spiders, and other pests. Since holiday decorations are in storage during the majority of the year, pests may find gaps in storage containers or even chew their way into boxes and spend the year nesting in your possessions. When unpacking decorations this season, take everything out of boxes and leave them in the garage to let mice, spiders and other insects escape from their hiding spots. Also, discard any decorations that have chew marks or have mice droppings on them.

Pantry pests often find their way into stored products with a long shelf life like dried fruit, cereal, pastas, even pet food. To avoid any encounters with pantry pests while baking this holiday season, be sure to pay close attention to any items you purchase and when you get home, remove the packaging and store your pantry items in plastic or glass airtight containers. This way you will see any signs of pantry pests at first and then ensure no critters can get into your food down the line.

Keep an eye out for wandering pests. With people coming and in out of your home more frequently this time of year, and more tasty food items being passed around, rodents and insects are tempted to enter your home in search of food, water, and shelter from the cold winter elements. To keep pests out of your home this winter, inspect the exterior of your home, sealing any holes, cracks, and gaps along your foundation and around windows, doors, wiring, pipes, and exterior vents. Install weather stripping on all exterior doors, keep your kitchen neat and tidy by regularly cleaning it and keeping it crumb free.
