Rodents In PA Are Taking Residence In Homes

Previous Post | Next Post

While the Christmas mouse in holiday stories may look cute and cuddly and like a good housemate, the reality is that rodents in the home are none of those things. With winter weather upon us, mice are scurrying around trying to find a warm shelter and a source of food to overwinter. This means that homes in Pennsylvania are a major target for rodent infestations. Having mice in your home can be dangerous for the structure of your home, the health of your family and for your personal belongings that you have stored inside.

Mice are rats and have a constant need to chew in order to prevent their continuously growing front incisors from becoming overgrown. Once inside your home they often will get into your attic, basement, and the space behind your walls. They can chew through electrical wires, plumbing pipes, drywall that can lead to fires, water damage, and mold. They will spread their urine and feces throughout your home, contaminating your food and food prep areas, and introduce a variety of diseases and bacteria including Salmonella, Lymphocytic choriomeningitis, dysentery and Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Along with chewing through structural parts of your home, they can also destroy personal items like furniture, carpeting, pictures, books, linens, and other items.

In order to prevent mice from destroying your home and property you will need to take steps to stop them from being able to enter into your home in the first place. Tips for preventing mice include:

  • Trimming back trees and bushes away from the exterior of your home; mice will use their branches to gain easy access to your home and can hide within them.

  • Stack firewood away from the exterior of your home.

  • Keep a tight fitting cap on your chimney.

  • Repair or replace loose roof shingles.

  • Repair any holes found around attic vents and soffits.

  • Remove garbage regularly from your home and store it outside in a container with a lid away from the outside of your home.

  • Don’t store food like fruits and vegetables on your counters; instead keep them in the refrigerator.

If are currently seeing signs of mice or ever start to see signs of mice in your home, you should immediately contact your local pest control company for assistance with rodent control. Signs of mice include seeing mouse dropping, nests made of paper or fabric usually found in storage areas, gnaw marks, and even hearing strange noises in your attic or behind your walls. Getting help from a professional pest control company will ensure that all of the mice in your home are completely eliminated, they will help you to find and fix the areas of your home that are allowing the mice indoors, and provide you with preventative services to protect your home and your property year-round from mice.
