Are You Seeing Earwigs In Ohio?

Previous Post | Next Post

Have you been down in the basement searching for a misplaced item and come across these long bugs with intimidating pincers or found these pests when bringing in your newspaper? Earwigs in Ohio, also known as pincer bugs, are a bit intimidating but really you don’t need to be too worried as they are relatively harmless. Thought earwigs can bite or pinch if they feel threatened, they are not considered dangerous to people, pets or even structures. Still, if you are finding them in your home you’re probably not too happy about that. With that in mind, here is some more information on earwigs to help you identify, prevent and control these pests should they try to invade your home.

What do earwigs looks like?

Often confused with silverfish, earwigs are reddish to dark brown in color and generally (with some exceptions) range in size from a quarter to half an inch in length. As mentioned above, they are most recognizable by their long bodies and their cerci (the two forcep-like appendages at the rear of their abdomen). Some earwigs have wings while others do not.

Where are earwigs likely to be found in homes?

Typically earwigs prefer environments that are damp (or humid), dark and warm; basements, bathrooms and kitchens are especially prone to this type of infestation. Nocturnal nature, earwigs hide out in the environments just noted and come out at night to feed.

Earwig prevention tips

Preventing earwigs starts with eliminating the damp, humid areas that attract these pests. Reducing moisture by installing proper ventilation, running a dehumidifier and fixing leaks from sinks and appliances will help you discourage earwig activity as well as deter other pests and possibly prevent mold issues. Next, your houseplants could be drawing in earwigs as these insects feed on plants in addition to other pests. Consider getting rid of plants or cutting back on the amount you have inside. Sealing cracks and any other openings along the foundation of your home or anywhere on the exterior will also benefit your pest prevention efforts. If they can’t find a way in, they won’t enter!

Though earwigs are not dangerous and will not cause damage or introduce health issues, they are a nuisance and really not the type of houseguest you want. So if you are already noticing earwigs inside your home, consider calling a pest control company. In addition to getting rid of earwigs, many offer home pest control services that address other household pests including spiders and mice.
