The Types of Spiders Found In West Virginia

Previous Post | Next Post

Many people really dislike spiders. You remember the movie Arachnophobia? That was a film that was centered on the fear of spiders and in West Virginia, spiders are everywhere. If you have a fear of spiders, the last thing you want is to find them inside your home, but unfortunately many homeowners find spiders in their WV homes every season, no matter what the weather is like outside. Spiders enter our homes to look for prey and if you have insects inside your home already, you could be unknowingly attracting spiders. The types of spiders in West Virginia include wolf spiders, orb weavers, jumping spiders, brown recluse spiders and black widow spiders.

Wolf spiders: These are a very common spider in West Virginia and possibly the largest spider found in WV. They aren’t known to have a venomous bite; they just look threatening because of their size. They carry their young on their backs until the young spiderlings are ready to go off on their own.

Orb weavers: These spiders are typically found outdoors and have the habit of spinning webs between plants to capture their prey. Their venom is not dangerous to humans.

Jumping spiders: These spiders are very common in WV and they have the ability to stalk and jump on their insect prey, but they are considered harmless to humans. They will usually be found outdoors but sometimes may seek shelter inside structures.

Brown recluse spiders: This spider is not known to reside in West Virginia at this time, but it has been found in neighboring states. It lives in secluded areas outdoors but may seek shelter indoors. It is capable of inflicting a poisonous bite to humans that can be dangerous to their health and possibly even life threatening.

Black widow spiders: This spider can be found in West Virginia and although it is known to be timid, it may bite a human if it’s been disturbed or its web has been disturbed. The bite of a black widow spider is poisonous and can cause severe physical pain and possibly be life threatening.

As you can see, some spiders are perfectly harmless while others can actually pose a threat to your health. If you have a fear of spiders, it doesn’t matter what type of spider you have in your home, you just want it out! If your fear of spiders is becoming a problem for you, or you have poisonous spiders inside your home, or spiders are starting to take over in large numbers, you’ll want to contact a WV pest control professional that deals with spiders. • Trim back bushes or tree branches that touch the side of your home; these can act as bridges for pests to get into your home.

  • Store wood piles a distance away from your home; pests like insects and arachnids will hide in wood piles. Additionally, when you bring wood indoors for a fire, make sure it is free from pests.
